Forensic Science Courses in India

There is no single national forensic science course, and no single entrance exam. What exists is a handful of degree shapes — each with its own duration, eligibility and admission route — offered by a mix of government and private institutions. This page lays them out together, so you can tell which route matches the qualification you already have.

Reviewed October 2026. Admission rules, fees and exam cycles change every year — treat this as a map, and confirm the details on the institution's own admission page before you apply.

How long each route takes

Forensic science in India is taught at five levels. The rung you enter at depends on whether you have finished Class 12, a bachelor's degree, or a master's.

  1. Integrated BSc–MSc

    5 years

After Class 12 with science. NFSU's integrated programme asks for Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics, with 55% for General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates and 50% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

  2. BSc / BSc (Hons)

    3 or 4 years

Most universities run a three-year degree; four-year honours and honours-with-research versions are now common under the NEP. Amity Noida runs both lengths, and Chandigarh University and the Institute of Forensic Science, Mumbai run four-year programmes.

  3. MSc

    2 years

The usual entry is a bachelor's in forensic science or a related science subject, and the eligible subjects are set by each university. One-year MSc routes exist for eligible four-year bachelor's graduates under the NEP — treat them as the exception, not the standard.

  4. Postgraduate or professional diploma

    6 months to 2 years

Specialist rather than general. NFSU lists a six-month Professional Diploma in Forensic Ballistics, and the Institute of Forensic Science, Mumbai runs postgraduate diplomas alongside its degrees.

  5. PhD

    3 years and up

A research route, advertised by both Amity's Institute of Forensic Sciences and NFSU. Eligibility, coursework and entrance requirements are set per institution.

There is no single all-India forensic entrance exam

This is the part that surprises most students. Each institution runs its own admission route, so the exam you sit follows the college you are applying to rather than the subject you want to study.

  • NFSU
    BSc–MSc Forensic Science

NFAT, the National Forensic Admission Test. NFSU's 2025 cycle ran on 28–29 June 2025; for the following cycle the university routes selected programmes through CUET (UG).

  • University of Delhi
    MSc Forensic Science

CUET (PG), then Delhi University's CSAS (PG) portal.

  • Chandigarh University
    BSc / MSc Forensic Science

CUCET, the university's own entrance test.

  • Lovely Professional University
BSc (Hons) Forensic Sciences with Research

Any one of LPUNEST, JEE Main or CUET.

Plenty of colleges — including most state universities — admit on Class 12 or degree marks alone, with no entrance test at all. Always read the admission notice for the year you are applying.

Where forensic science is taught in India

A verified sample, not a full directory: these are institutions whose current programme pages confirm a forensic science degree.

Government and public

  • National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU)

    Gandhinagar, with campuses including Delhi

An Institution of National Importance and a central university. Five-year integrated BSc–MSc alongside postgraduate and doctoral programmes. LNJN NICFS in Delhi is often listed as a separate college; it is NFSU's Delhi campus, so its programmes appear on NFSU's site.

  • Institute of Forensic Science, Mumbai

    Mumbai, Maharashtra

A constituent college of Dr. Homi Bhabha State University, established by the Government of Maharashtra. BSc and MSc Forensic Science, plus postgraduate diplomas.

  • University of Delhi

    Delhi

MSc Forensic Science through the Department of Anthropology — a two-year programme, with a one-year route for eligible Delhi University graduates under the NEP.

Working out which route fits

  • Start from the qualification you already have

Class 12 with science opens the integrated and BSc routes. A science bachelor's opens MSc. A bachelor's in another subject does not automatically qualify you for an MSc in forensic science — the eligible-subject list is per programme, so read it before you plan around it.

  • Read eligibility on the programme page, not the aggregator

Minimum marks and required subjects are set by each university. NFSU's own threshold for its integrated programme is the kind of detail that decides whether you can apply at all, and it is rarely the same number across universities.

  • Confirm the exam route for the year you are applying

A programme that ran on one entrance test can be routed through another the next cycle — NFSU's own material moved between NFAT and CUET (UG) between cycles. Check the admission notice for your year, not last year's blog post.

  • Ask where the labs are before you compare rankings

Forensic science is taught in laboratories, and the practical facilities behind a programme matter more than its position in a listicle. Departments also differ in the internships and laboratory access they arrange.

After the degree

Forensic science graduates work in state and central forensic science laboratories, police and investigation units, private laboratories, hospitals and universities. The day-to-day material on this site is a reasonable way to see what the work actually involves before you commit four years to it.
