Kochi, Kerala

Summary

Police in Kochi have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with an alleged arson attack near the historic Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam. Investigators are examining suspected links to individuals based overseas after a preliminary review of the accused’s mobile phone reportedly revealed suspicious online communications, references to possible attacks and potential cryptocurrency transactions. Digital forensic analysis is expected to play a significant role in determining the motive and identifying any other individuals involved.

What Happened?

The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on 12 October 2026, when a fire was allegedly set at Blossom Nursery, located opposite the Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam Market, Kochi. According to police, the accused, identified as Ebin Paul, allegedly arrived in a blue Maruti Suzuki Ignis, used petrol to start the fire and recorded the incident on his mobile phone before leaving the location.

Investigators examined CCTV footage from the surrounding area and used technical leads to trace the vehicle allegedly involved. Despite difficulties caused by the limited availability of functioning CCTV cameras in the market area, the investigation led police to a rented residence in Puthencruz, where the accused was arrested.

Digital Evidence and Suspected Network Connections

The investigation took a significant turn following a preliminary examination of the accused’s mobile phone. Police reportedly found communications with unidentified individuals, participation in online groups and messages referring to Jewish places of worship and possible attacks in different Indian cities. Investigators are examining whether a person referred to as “Boss” directed the alleged activity and whether recordings of the incident were intended to be shared in exchange for payment.

The possibility of cryptocurrency-based transactions is also under investigation. However, the identities of the alleged contacts, the nature of their connections and any suspected international terror links remain subject to verification.

Possible Connection to an Earlier Arson Incident

Police are also investigating a possible connection between the Kochi incident and an earlier arson case in Muvattupuzha, in Ernakulam district. Investigators reportedly recovered videos from the accused’s phone that may be connected to the earlier incident. His alleged role in that case is being examined alongside evidence collected during the current investigation.

A search of the accused’s rented residence reportedly resulted in the seizure of several narcotic and psychotropic substances, leading to further investigation into possible offences involving controlled substances.

The Role of Forensic Science

The case highlights the importance of digital forensics in contemporary criminal investigations. A detailed examination of the accused’s mobile phone and other digital devices may help investigators authenticate communications, reconstruct relevant digital activity, identify possible contacts and examine the origin and movement of suspected cryptocurrency transactions.

Forensic investigators may need to assess the integrity and provenance of digital evidence, preserve relevant data, document acquisition procedures and maintain a verifiable chain of custody. Where applicable, forensic examination of CCTV recordings, vehicle-related evidence and other physical traces may help corroborate or challenge the emerging investigative narrative.

Digital material must be interpreted in context. The presence of a message, contact or recording does not independently establish the identity, intention or criminal liability of a person. Investigators must corroborate digital findings with other admissible evidence and distinguish verified facts from investigative leads.

Investigation Status

A Special Investigation Team has been constituted to investigate the incident, establish the motive and examine possible links to other offences. Central agencies are also reported to be examining information concerning the suspected wider network.

As of 14 October 2026, the investigation remains ongoing. The suspected international connections, alleged coordination and possible cryptocurrency payments have not been conclusively established. The allegations against the accused must therefore be distinguished from findings proved through investigation and judicial proceedings.
